The World Association of Professional Tennis Players decided today, Saturday, to postpone this year’s edition of the Montreal Women's Championship for the next year.
The move by the association came in light of the worsening crisis of the emerging virus Corona around the world.
According to the association's statement on its official website, the precautionary measures applied by the Canadian government to confront the pandemic, will prevent the championship from taking place on time.
The tournament was scheduled to take place between August 7 and 16, but will be postponed for the next year.
"The criteria applied by the Canadian government will prevent the tournament from being held until August 31, and thus the tournament has been postponed to 2021," said the WTA statement.
"The World Association of Professional Tennis Women Players always places health and safety as a top priority, we realize the difficulty of the decision and we look forward to returning again to Montreal in 2021," the statement added.
