Officially, Manchester United responds to the decision to suspend Cavani

In an official statement, Manchester United reflected on the decision to suspend striker Edinson Cavani for three matches and to pay a 100,000-pound fine (more details).

The club said: "As mentioned previously, Edinson Cavani was not aware that his words could be misunderstood, and he sincerely apologized for this and for anyone who was insulted."

He added: "Despite his sincere belief that he was simply sending a nice thanks - in response to a congratulatory message from a close friend, he chose not to appeal the decision, out of respect and solidarity with the Football Association and fighting racism."

And he concluded: "It is clear that context and intent are essential factors. We note that the Independent Organizing Committee was required to impose a suspension of at least three matches, and the club is confident that the Independent Organizing Committee will clarify in its written reasons that Kavani is not racist and there was no racist intention in his post ".
